Exploiting the visual potential of relationships

For my relationship display, I used Venn diagram and parent-child node diagram to represent the meaning of yoga. The overlapping between circles represent the combination of 3 components that makes up yoga. For the second display, the equal size of small green circles symbolize the equal importance of the 3. The big orange circle is surrounded by the small green circles to show yoga consists of these 3 main parts.

The message of my relationship display is that yoga means the union of mind, body and spirit. These 3 components makes up the core of yoga.

I used all solid circles with no opacity used for overlapping areas from the visual language model. My visual language has little to no image for graphs, so I used minimal texts and no image inside my shapes.

I used the same orange, brown and green used in my color model. I also used the same background color for the display.

I used the same Arial font from my text model for the subheading and description.

I designed my display to occupy the middle left section of the layout model. This is the section right under the main title.

In the first display, I see 3 circles overlapping with each other, I can tell that they are of same importance and the 3 things are used for explaining what is yoga.

The 2nd one has 3 small circle around the big round yoga icon. I can see that these 3 components makes up yoga.

I prefer the 2nd one better. The small circles are surrounded to the big yoga circle. It does a better job communicating that the 3 components makes up yoga. Looking at the display, I feel like the 3 small components fall under the big circle. I can easily tell that the 3  words are related to yoga.

The visual language model is a good match, since the icon used is very abstract and it's the same level of detail as your visual language model.

The color are the same orange and green color from the color model, so it emulated the model pretty well.

The text model uses the same Arial font with same font weight from the text model.

Response to first critique

The critique gave all positive feedback on my display, so I tweaked the placement and shapes for the display to better communicate the idea that body, mind and spirit are inter-connected. I was able to achieve that by adding the green circular belt under the 3 components.

I see 3 circles. I can see yoga is the combination of the 3 components. The 2nd version, I feel like 3 components are 3 distinct things and don't have much relationship in between them.

I like the first version better. The overlap enforces the relationship that they are working together to make up yoga. The overlapping between the 3 circles creates a nice sense that the 3 factors are interrelated.

I think both of your display matches the visual language model well, since it uses the same rounded shapes with solid fill colors. You used the same orange and green from the color model, and the text you used for the subheading and the label in each circles are very similar to your text model.

The display looks like a good match for the middle left part of your layout model.

Response to second critique

This critique also gave all positive feedback on my display. I ended up changing the placement and shapes for the display to better communicate the idea that body, mind and spirit are inter-connected. I was able to achieve that by adding the green circular belt under the 3 components.

Julia Zhu

I see the 3 circles and a lot of text for descriptions. The second display has 4 circles with 2 different colors. I can tell that the display is about what yoga is. And body, mind and spirit makes up yoga.

I can't pick a better version. I like the combination with the both - I would like to see the combination of the 2. I think that having the overlapping between the circles really help with showing the interrelationship between the 2 components. But at the same time, having the text yoga in the middle will make the message that "these 3 things combines makes up yoga" clearer.

I think you followed the visual language model pretty well - you used the same rounded shape, solid colors and abstract figures.

The text you used for the subheadings and the descriptive texts mimic the same font style and weights as your text model.

Your display matched color model very well - you used the same orange and green as your model.

You display looks like it will fit the middle left hand side the model pretty well.

Response to third critique

Julia mentioned that combining my 2 versions will serve a better way to communicate that: 1. Theses 3 things combines makes up yoga. 2. The goal and meaning yoga is linking these 3 things together. So I took her advice and combined 2 displays together - now it not only show the relationship between yoga and the 3 components, but also shows the inter-connection between the 3 components themselves.

The green ring represents the 3 components are connected, and syncing up to achieve the state of mind for yoga - where 3

This revised display communicates the meaning of yoga - the union of mind, body and spirit. Linking the 3 components together makes up the goal of yoga.

I followed the same use of flat, solid color blocks from my visual language model, and also used the same abstract figures used in my model.

Revise this text to describe how you've chosen colors for the background, text, lines and other graphic elements to emulate your color model.

I chose the same orange and dark green used in the color model for my relationship display, and used the same light yellow background from the model.

Revise this text to describe how you've decide which type style from your typography model to use for the text in the display.

I used to the bolded Arial and light small Arial font for both my subheading and descriptive text, which are the the closet font based from the model.

Revise this text to describe which areas on your layout model you've designed these displays to occupy.

My relationship display will occupy the middle area on the left hand side of the layout display.

I see the 3 components works together in a circle system. I feel like body, mind and spirit creates a cycle. The 3 things communicates that: when you first do yoga, you focus more on the body, and then you are able to control your mind, and finally you are able to achieve inner peace spiritually.

I prefer the new revision better, the 3 orange circles are connected, the old one feels like the 3 things are separated. The new one does a better job of showing that the 3 components of yoga are interconnected within themselves.

The visual model is a good match, since the shapes have very little detail and they consists of all abstract figures.

You used the same colors used in your color model.

For the text model, the subheading and the descriptive text follow the same font style of the text model.

For the layout model, I can see you uses the middle part of the left hand side of you layout model. You may want to consider how to make your block occupy a more rectangular shape.

Response to first critique

The critic was able to fully grasp the message my display wants to communicate, and gave positive feedback for all aspects. I stick to the same format for my revision and used the same 3 small circles in a ring in this version. I changed some details to make the display to have a more simplistic feeling to match my visual language better.

Sarah Phillips

When I look at the display. It says the flow of mind, body and spirit is essential in yoga. I like that the color of the components are the same as the yoga pose.

I like the new version better, since the relationship is communicated much clearer in this one, and you have less text, but then with this version, I would put the text next to the image. Since your layout model and your visual language model also has examples where the text and images are next to each other, I think having a 2 column layout not only makes the section more compacted, but matches the models better.

The visual language is very flat and simple, so it works very well with your chosen model.

The display also fits your designated area well.

The gap in the ring makes it feel disconnected. I think having the 3 components surrounding the yoga pose is enough to communicate that these 3 things makes up yoga, and also does a good job showing that the 3 things are connected.

Response to second critique

Sarah suggested to use a 2-column layout and place the text and graph side by side. I incorporated her feedback and reflected the changes in my revision --  I agree that the new layout not only made the section more well-knit, but follows my visual language and layout model as well.

In response to Sarah's comment about the ring, I deleted the gaps in the ring and got rid of the arrows. Since the gap and the arrows implies that the 3 components has a ordering or steps in the process, which may lead to people having a misinterpretation of the display. I made the ring a complete circle to emphasize that the 3 components are of equal importance and has no specific ordering between them.

Iean Drew

I see a model of a person with a classic yoga pose, surrounded with 3 orgs - body, spirit and mind. I see the point of yoga is to sync the 3 things together. And that yoga is a training of combining of the 3 components, which creates a circle of learning.

I prefer the cleanness of the first display. But I like the revised version, since it does a better job of showing the interrelationship between the 3 components. So you might consider making your new display to have a more simplistic feel.

It seems that your display fit the color model very well -- you hit all the right notes for the orange and green.

Your text seems to fit the same bolded text for the title and the small thin text for the descriptive text.

For the visual language model, you are able to mimic the simplistic feel of the figure in your model, and it seems that your are able to follow the same flat feeling from your model.

I like the idea that you can put the text and image into a 2- column layout, I think that will fit your visual language and layout model better.

Response to third critique

Iean mentioned that he would like to see the display to have a more simplistic feel as my original model.  By deleting the gaps and arrows in the ring, I was able to make the display cleaner but did a better job representing the correct interconnection of body, mind and spirit.

Iean gave the same suggestion as Sarah on making the section into a 2-column layout. I took their advice and the new layout does make this section more compact and visually pleasing.

The display uses 3 small circles with solid colors to represent the 3 main components that makes up yoga. The green ring that connects the 3 orange orgs shows that these factors creates a cycle that help practitioners reach the ultimate wholeness of life -- which is the goal and meaning of yoga.

I used abstract figure to mimic the same level of detail and realism in the visual language for the yoga icon. The 3 components use orange circles which matches the same flat feel of my model.

I chose the same orange and dark green colors from the color model for the shapes, and used the same light yellow color for the background.

I used bolded capitalized Arial font for the subheading and thin light Arial font for the body. These font styles are the same as the ones used in my typography model.

This display will occupy the middle left section of my layout model, which is the part under the heading section of the model.
